Domaine de la Casa Blanca Banyuls is a sweet red fortified wine from Banyuls in Languedoc-Roussillon, made solely from Grenache Noir. Winemaker Herve Levano makes it in the style of a Vintage Port, a Rimage style that is reductive and meant for long aging. The grapes macerate for two weeks after the mutage, then the wine ages 12 months in old 400-liter casks. It is deep and intense, with cooked plums, dark berry fruits, chocolate and spice, and a long, clean finish. Residual sugar is 80 to 90 grams per liter.
Casa Blanca was created in 1970 and is one of the oldest family domains in the appellation. Its 10 hectares of vines, 4 of them organic, are 70 to 100 years old and grow on terraced schist slopes beside the Mediterranean near the Spanish border. Everything is done by hand, and yields are very low. Levano and vineyard manager Laurent Escapa combine wood aging with temperature control. Valérie Reig works the soil with her mule Ursule.
